I usually teach my students what the curriculum says but I always include stories or history about USA or Great Britain to my students because mastering a language includes food, culture, literature, customs... everything related to language and to people.
I also tell them to "create" something about a book we read, they have to use their imagination to transmit what the book says or what they have understood about the book. I want them to think, to link ideas and to express themselves the best they can.
